For some people, today (3 May) is a sad day.

And this is the reason why – on 3 May 1987, Dalida committed suicide by overdosing on barbiturates.  She left behind a note which read, “La vie m’est insupportable… Pardonnez-moi.” (“Life has become unbearable for me… Forgive me.”).

Yolanda Cristina Gigliotti (17 January 1933 – 3 May 1987), better known as Dalida was an Egyptian-born Italian singer and actress who performed and recorded in more than ten languages, including Arabic, Italian, Greek, German, French, English, Japanese, Hebrew, Dutch and Spanish.

Twice honored with the Oscar mondial du succès du disque (the “World Oscar of Recording Success”), she is the only European singer to have won this award more than once. Dalida ranks among 7 biggest singers of all time.

If you don’t know her, listen to the next two songs. They are beautiful….and the fact that they are in Franch adds something extra.

Rest in peace, Dalida!
